The 3-point bending tests described in ISO 178 and ASTM D 790 represent classical characterization methods for rigid and semi-rigid plastics. Typical test results include the flexural E-modulus, stress at 3.5% elongation and strains at yield point and at specimen break.
The results of the flexure test show in particular material behavior near the surface of the specimen. The deflections measured are approximately four times greater than the extensions recorded in the tensile test.
testXpert software enables Zwick testing machines to compensate for deformation of the load frame, force sensor and bending tool. This allows sufficiently accurate measurement via the crosshead travel encoder of the testing machine, simplifying operation of the testing machine, particularly when used for quality assurance.
